Avalanche Monitoring Systems and Sensors

Optical Scientific, Inc. (OSI) provides innovative Optical Weather Identifiers that can be used in avalanche monitoring systems and avalanche detection technology to enhance safety and mitigate risks in snow-prone regions.

Our cutting-edge Scintillation based precipitation sensors are designed to assist researchers, environmental agencies, and safety authorities with accurate, real-time data collection of precipitation, present weather and visibility.

OSI’s APG-815 (all precipitation gauge) and the OWI-430 & OWI-650 (Optical Weather identifiers) can play a critical role in snow avalanche monitoring and avalanche risk assessment, offering precise measurements of the precipitation type, rate and accumulation amount in real time. Allowing that data to contribute to the safety of infrastructure, communities, and outdoor activities in avalanche-prone areas.

APG-815 – utilizes in-beam optical scintillation to measure instantaneous rain rate, snow liquid water equivalent and precipitation accumulation, along with discriminating 20 NWS/WMO codes for type of precipitation

OWI series sensors incorporate three different sensing technologies:

· In-beam optical scintillation (precipitation type)

· discriminates rain, snow, hail, drizzle, sleet, etc

· Off-axis forward scattering (visibility; RVR)

· Acoustic (Hail & ice pellets)

· Reports 50 NWS/WMO codes

Our sensors can be used in comprehensive avalanche prediction tools and avalanche measurement technologies that are developed to address the growing need for proactive monitoring in vulnerable regions. By adding these sensors, authorities can implement effective avalanche early warning systems that allow for timely interventions and risk mitigation. The data collected by OSI’s optical precipitation sensors provides essential insights into avalanche behavior, helping to predict potential threats and safeguard lives and property.

Whether monitoring snow accumulation, or assessing overall avalanche risk, OSI’s Optical scintillation based precipitation sensors ensures that decision-makers have the critical information they need to act quickly. Our solutions are trusted worldwide for their reliability, precision, and ability to operate in extreme conditions.

By utilizing OSI’s advanced precipitation monitoring technology, organizations can enhance their avalanche risk assessment capabilities, implement robust safety measures, and contribute to the broader understanding of snow and avalanche dynamics. Stay ahead of potential hazards with OSI’s industry-leading Optical Weather identifiers for improved avalanche detection technology and early warning systems designed for maximum reliability in high-risk environments.
